How do I know what search terms to use when I'm looking for information in the libraries' online databases?

Answer

There are several ways to identify what to use for a search term:

  1. If you know the topic, but are unsure of the exact word(s) to use, try a few general terms that are synonyms. You can change these to something more specific if you get too many results
  2. Look for "clues" in your assignment. If you've been told to find information on a specific topic, the assignment's question probably has some words you can use to get started
  3. If you find an article or book that matches what you're looking for, check the subject terms assigned to it. Then try searching using those terms
  4. Too many results? Try adding more search terms (you can add more terms at the top of the results page), or using a more specific term.
  5. Not enough results? Try using a more general search word, or removing some search terms

Remember, you may need to try different terms or a different combination of words to find the results you're looking for!
